Installation Checklist for Citrix Presentation Server™ 4.5 for Windows Server™ 2003

Version 1.2

Deploying Citrix Presentation Server is a multistage exercise. This checklist provides basic information to get you started with installing the server software portion of Citrix Presentation Server. This checklist provides information about the following:

This checklist does not provide information about client deployment.

Citrix strongly recommends that you do not attempt to deploy the product using only this installation checklist. Before you begin installation, Citrix recommends that you read the Pre-Installation Update Bulletin, the Citrix Presentation Server readme, and review the installation documentation listed in the deployment guides and resources section. All relevant documentation is available from the , included on your Citrix Presentation Server CD.

Installation Prerequisites

Before installing Citrix Presentation Server for Windows, Citrix recommends you prepare your environment by performing the following:

  1. Consult the Pre-Installation Update Bulletin.
  2. Use Windows Update to ensure all servers are patched with critical updates.
  3. Remap server drive letters (if applicable). For more information, see the Citrix Presentation Server Administrator’s Guide. Citrix recommends that you remap server drives, if required, before you install any system requirements, including the Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0. Remapping server drive letters after you install Presentation Server can cause unstable performance by the server, operating system components, and installed applications.
  4. Ensure your servers meet all system requirements for the components you are installing. If you use the Autorun.exe program to perform your installation, Autorun installs many system requirements automatically for you; see the system requirements section for specifics. If you are performing command-line based installation, you may need to install these components manually.
  5. Create the data store before you install Citrix Presentation Server if you are creating a new server farm and plan to use Microsoft SQL Server, Oracle, or IBM DB2 for the farm data store.

Note: If SQL Server Express is used, you must install it and restart the system before you install Citrix Presentation Server.

For more information, see the Citrix Presentation Server Administrator’s Guide.

  6. Install and configure Citrix licensing before installing Citrix Presentation Server or any component of the Citrix Access Suite. See the Getting Started with Citrix Licensing Guide.

Note: Citrix recommends that if you install the Web Interface, the License Management Console, and Citrix Presentation Server on the same computer, you always install the Web Interface first.

To download and install critical Citrix updates after you install components, visit the Citrix Hotfixes and Service Packs Web site.

Information to Have on Hand

Before you begin installing Presentation Server, have the following information handy:

  • The name of the server where you installed the Citrix license server. You are prompted for this name during the installation.
  • The edition of Presentation Server for which you have licenses.
  • If you are joining an existing server farm that is configured to use a port number other than the default port (port 80) for the Citrix XML Service, have the new port number on hand because you must enter it during Citrix Presentation Server installation.
  • A print out of Chapters 2 and 3 of the Citrix Presentation Server Administrator’s Guide for easy reference about installation options.

Log on to the Windows Server 2003 computer as a user with local administrator privileges. You must have local administrator privileges to install Citrix Presentation Server 4.5.

Key Points about Installing Citrix Presentation Server 4.5

The following section highlights key information about installing Citrix Presentation Server 4.5. For installation procedures, see Chapter 3 of the Citrix Presentation Server Administrator’s Guide.

Secure Gateway for Windows

  • Secure Gateway Setup is found on the Citrix Presentation Server Component CD. From the first page in the Autorun, click Network & Security > Install Secure Gateway.
  • The system requirements for the Secure Gateway for Windows appear in Secure Gateway for Windows Administrator's Guide.
  • While the Secure Gateway for Windows functionality has not changed since Citrix Presentation Server 3.0, it is important to install the Citrix Hotfix SGE300W003, which is discussed in the Secure Gateway Pre-Installation Checklist, before starting the Secure Gateway. If you do not install this hotfix, newer clients cannot use the Session Reliability feature.

Citrix Application Streaming Feature

  1. To prepare applications for streaming, you must install the Citrix Streaming Profiler from the Component CD. For information about when to use specific operating systems, see the Citrix Application Streaming Guide.
Caution! You must install the Streaming Profiler on a separate, newly installed computer with an operating system that matches the typical operating system of your end-users’ client computers. Disk space requirements: 6.05MB
  2. The server or workstation on which you install the profiler must be one of the following:
    • Windows 2000 Professional with Service Pack 3 or 4
    • Windows XP Professional with Service Pack 1 or 2
    • Windows XP Professional, 64-bit Edition with Service Pack 1
    • Windows Server 2003 with Service Pack 1 or 2
    • Windows Server 2003, Release 2
    • Windows Server 2003, 64-bit Edition with Service Pack 1 or 2

    • Disk space requirements: 4MB

Notes for publishing streaming applications

  • Before publishing a streaming application, you must prepare the application with the Citrix Streaming Profiler. A profile is a collection of the programs and files needed to run the program.
    1. On the workstation with the Streaming Profiler installed, make sure the application’s setup program is available from the profiling workstation.
    2. From the Start menu, open the Streaming Profiler and select to create a New Profile.
    3. In the profiling wizard, select the operating systems that match your end-users' operating systems. This is the initial target in the profile.
    4. Follow the wizard steps to install the application in the streaming application profile.
    5. Finally, save the completed profile on a network file share that your end-users can access.

  • Publish the profiled application using the Access Management Console. In the Publish Application wizard, select one of the following streaming options, point at the profile on the file share, and continue by specifying the users who have permission to run the application.

    • To allow only specified end-users to stream applications to their Windows desktops, select the publishing option Stream to client.

The end-users must have the Citrix Streaming Client installed locally. When a user runs an application enumerated by Program Neighborhood Agent 10.x or through a Web Interface site, the streaming client finds the correct applications in the profile on the file server, sets up the isolation environment on the client, and then streams the application from the file server to the safety of the isolation environment on the client.

    • To allow both streaming to client desktops and access from Presentation Server, select the dual-mode option, Streamed if possible, otherwise accessed from a server.

With this method, clients that support streaming launch the streamed application as described above. If launching a streamed application fails on the client device, Presentation Server seamlessly streams the application to the server, which then presents the application to the client device through an ICA connection.

  • Install the Citrix Streaming Client on end-users' desktops, where it runs in the background (not visible to users). In addition, you can install Program Neighborhood Agent 10.x on users’ desktops so they can enumerate and cache streamed applications locally. The Citrix Streaming Clients Package.msi, located on the Component CD, installs both clients. Note that previous versions of Program Neighborhood Agent do not support streaming and are automatically upgraded when you install the package. If you configure a Web Interface site from which users stream applications, Program Neighborhood Agent is not needed.

  • To allow specified users to continue running streamed applications in offline mode, additional offline licenses and Farm Properties configuration are required. To run streamed applications offline, end-users must launch the applications through Program Neighborhood Agent 10.x. Web Interface does not support offline access.

Upgrading Citrix Presentation Server

Upgrading to Citrix Presentation Server 4.5 requires upgrading your license server and choosing an upgrade path for Presentation Server. For important information about upgrading Conferencing Manager and the Access Management Console, see the respective sections. For key information about using Citrix Presentation Server 4.5 in a mixed-farm environment, see Chapter 3 of the Citrix Presentation Server Administrator’s Guide.

Upgrading Licensing

If you are running the license server that came with Citrix Presentation Server 4.0, you must upgrade to the latest license server, which is included with Citrix Presentation Server 4.5. Your existing license files are compatible with the new license server. For information about upgrading your license server, see the Citrix whitepaper Licensing: Migrating, Upgrading, and Renaming (CTX108655).

Choosing an Upgrade or Migration Path for Citrix Presentation Server

There are two paths for upgrading to Citrix Presentation Server 4.5 from a previous release:

  • Automatic Server Software Upgrade
  • Upgrading using the Citrix Presentation Server 4.5 installation wizard requires Presentation Server 4.0 or Presentation Server 3.0 on Windows Server 2003 with a minimum of Service Pack 1 installed. Before beginning to install Presentation Server 4.5, the target system must have all prerequisites that Presentation Server does not install automatically.

  • Farm Migration
    • If you are running MetaFrame 1.0, MetaFrame 1.8, or MetaFrame XP, you must perform a full migration; settings are not migrated automatically
    • If you are running Presentation Server 3.0 or 4.0 on Windows 2000 Server, you can retain your farm’s configuration information by joining the computer running Presentation Server 4.5 to the existing farm

For more information about upgrading and farm migrations, see the Citrix Presentation Server Administrator’s Guide.

Upgrading the Database Used for the Data Store

If you are using Microsoft SQL Server Desktop Engine (MSDE) as the database for your data store, you must migrate the database to another supported database, such as SQL Server 2005 Express Edition, Service Pack 1. For information about migrating to SQL Server Express from either Microsoft Access or MSDE, see the Citrix Presentation Server Administrator’s Guide.

Upgrading the Access Management Console

With the release of Citrix Presentation Server 4.5, the Access Management Console is now required to administer and publish applications. To use Citrix Presentation Server 4.5, you must install the Version 4.5 of the Access Management Console.

If you are using the Access Management Console in a mixed-farm environment, you must run Discovery through the Presentation Server 4.5 version of the Access
Management Console. If you want to install the 4.5 version of the Access Management Console on a server running Presentation Server, you must install
the console on a server running Presentation Server 4.5.

Upgrading Presentation Server Clients and the Secure Gateway

Important: The following is important information for Citrix Presentation Server 4.5 deployments.

If you are upgrading the Client for Java (Version 9.3 and higher) or the Presentation Server Client for Windows (Version 9.200 and higher), you must you install Citrix Hotfix SGE300W003 on the Secure Gateway server before starting the Secure Gateway. If you do not install this hotfix, newer clients cannot use the Session Reliability feature. For more information, see Secure Gateway Pre-Installation Checklist.

Secure Gateway for Windows functionality has not changed since Citrix Presentation Server 3.0. If you already installed Hotfix SGE300W003 and its replacements, you do not need to reinstall the Secure Gateway or apply this hotfix.
